COUNSELING
ad/hd
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can cause concerns across settings resulting in behavioral challenges, problems with learning, and social difficulties. Counseling equips clients and supportive others to reduce these challenges through research-informed strategies.
autism spectrum disorder
Those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) live in a world not always well-fitted to the way they think, feel, and take in life’s experiences. Counseling provides the chance to develop strategies to improve social skills, to increase flexible thinking, and to effectively accomplish tasks of daily living.
Depression
Those who face depression may experience depressed mood, loss of interest in life’s activities, mood swings, irritability, challenges with sleep/appetite/energy, and/or suicidal thoughts. Counseling for depression (including disorders like Major Depressive Disorder and Persistent Depressive Disorder) provides the opportunity to learn new ways for effective mood management and opportunities to decrease the negative impact of depression.
life stressors
Important relationships, major transitions, and unexpected losses can all lead to stress. Counseling provides the opportunity to learn how to manage stress. Areas which can be addressed include, for example, family communication, parent-child conflict, parenting skills training, relationship difficulties, conflict resolution, school-related problems, adoption, divorce, death, job loss, grief, stress management, communication skills, and habit change.
youth sexually inappropriate behavior
Sexually inappropriate behavior among youth may involve boundary-crossing (i.e., inappropriate touching, exposure, or communication), access to sexual media or pornography, production of inappropriate media (i.e., sexting, sending nude photos), sexually reactive behavior (i.e., sexualized behaviors related to sexual abuse), and/or sexual behavior resulting in school sanctions or court involvement. Counseling provides the opportunity for caretakers to learn ways to support healthy development, for youth to choose appropriate behavior, and to prevent sexually inappropriate behavior in the future. Counseling is available for youth age 8 to 17 and for youth with developmental disabilities.
anxiety
Anxiety (worries, fears) take many forms, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Phobias, Separation Anxiety, and Panic Disorder. Counseling provides the opportunity to learn evidence-based strategies to effectively manage anxiety.
behavioral concerns
Children and adolescents fail to meet parental and community expectations for a variety of reasons. These youth may present with challenges related to Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder, toilet training, enuresis, or encopresis. Counseling provides the opportunity for youth to improve their behavior and their decision-making, and for caretakers to improve their ability to affect behavior change for those in their care.
Developmental Disabilities
Developmental disabilities and differences such as Intellectual Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder, and Borderline Intellectual Functioning may affect functioning in school/work settings, and in family/social relationships. Counseling provides opportunities for skill-building to increase success across settings. Counseling often involves partnering across systems for those we serve.
Traumatic STREss
Traumatic events can result in major changes in mood, thinking, and behavior which can cause problems in relationships, at school, in the community, and in the workplace. The effects of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect can last long after they occur. Counseling provides the opportunity to learn new approaches to managing and reducing traumatic stress. We specialize in the treatment of youth affected by trauma.
